The Ghazals of An'ahad
THE SPIDER
About our state, whether winding or unwinding fate, who knows?
The spider swings in his own web while his bellyache grows.
Did he eat a boll weevil or has he been digesting his own web?
The spider knows something is wrong, when silk no longer flows.
With eight legs to stand on, is it not possible to disguise a bad leg?
Between winding and unwinding, one just spins round in sun glows.
The spider wonders at the intricacy of the pattern he has spun.
Framed by those transparent threads are rectilinear cameos.
That lucent net of glistening early dew reflects the morning light.
One can almost see elves and fancies in nearly tangible rainbows.
Everyday he repairs his web like a conscientious fisherman his net.
A web for bugs, a net for fish, but for the love of God, who knows?
A spider should not be found caught in his own web, like this one.
No one will never unwind the strands of fate this way, God knows
